An excellent coat but a question about the brand

My coat arrived promptly and in good order. It was an excellent fit, felt very good to wear and has a feel of high quality. I like the cut. Relatively good weather since it arrived has meant that the coat's rain resistance has not yet been tested very seriously but my impression is that it will perform admirably. I have no regret about the purchase. However, I was slightly mystified to find that the coat was brand-labelled to Jack Murphy rather than Longcoats. As it happens, I live half-time in Ireland and am familiar with Jack Murphy's products, which I like. Still, it is strange to find the same coat advertised under a different name at a slightly lower price on the Jack Murphy website. Presumably Longcoats has fused with, or been taken over by Jack Murphy but the interchangeable branding is curious, especially in view of the price differential.

When I founded Longcoats, my original goal was to design and manufacture my own range. I quickly realised the start-up costs and logistics were far higher than I could sensibly risk, so instead I approached two established makers — Jack Murphy being one — to create a small collaborative range under the Longcoats name.

The idea was simple: to curate and co-brand quality long coats that suited life in the Cornish weather, each given its own Cornish name and Longcoats identity. The plan remains to develop an exclusive design of our own in the future, likely in partnership with one of these manufacturers.

Re price we are usually within £15 of Ireland prices. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. We also spend a huge amount on Google advertising so these wonderful coats can get into the hands of as many people as possible.

TAPED SEAMS

This is a method used to make materials waterproof by putting a waterproof tape or liquid sealant along the seams (usually on the inside so it can't be seen).

WATERPROOF

Resists water droplets from passing through. Water resistance is measured by the amount of water, in mm, which can be suspended above the fabrics before water passes.

WINDPROOF

"Windproof" fabric doesn't let the wind come through. It is very useful to keep you warm. Fabrics are made windproof by membrane or by weaving them very tightly.

BREATHABLE

Allows body heat and perspiration to pass through. Breathability is measured by the rate at which water vapour passes through, in units of grams of water vapour.

Waterproof Testing

We are pretty obsessed with staying dry. As well as using our coats all year round, in all weather conditions, we test them in a variety of ways - including a fairly intense hosepipe test. Even after a full five minutes of hosing the coats remain completely dry inside.
